Digital Photography Guide

If you are using a digital camera it most likely came with software to transfer your images to your computer. You can also scan your print photographs. If you don't own a scanner, many photo processing services can develop your film and have the images put on a computer disk or on the internet. If your image is digitized at a high resolution for printing purposes, reduce it to 72 pixels per inch. You should find the Resolution setting within the 'Image' menu or your image editing program.

Check the size of your photo. If it is too big it will look silly on your page. A maximum dimension of about 550 pixels wide will fit on the page. Scaling the images to a smaller size will allow your pages to viewed more quickly and will look better. Go to the 'image size' function and specify the pixels in each direction. Be sure that 'constrain proportions' is selected and then you can simply change the width dimension and the height will be adjusted to scale proportionally.

See if you can enhance your image. If your image editing program allows you to change the brightness and contrast of an image, consider experimenting to see how the photograph changes when the contrast is increased. Most digitized photographs improve with this simple step. You might try cropping the image to improve the layout. Another fun thing to do is to create a drop shadow to make your photo look dimensional. You can also create a frame for your photograph or use the frames included in your image editing program.

Save your images as a .jpg (example: "YourImage.jpg"). The .jpg file format compresses your photograph so that it is compatible with the internet and will allow you to choose a specific levels of compression. (your image editing program may have a specific setting for saving images for the web - check the File menu). Experiment to see how small you can make your file without loosing the quality of your image.  Sometimes cropping the photograph improves the composition as well as reducing the file size.  We recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements software for an easy, inexpensive and full featured program to manipulate digital images.

Your file size limit is 150K.  If the .jpg file exceeds that limit it will not upload. If it is too large, check to be sure your image is reduced to 72 pixels per inch and you have compressed it.  Uploading a prepared image is simple. Just follow the directions. If you are not satisfied with your image, try reworking it in your image editing program and uploading it a second time. If your image does not change after the second upload, click your browser's Refresh or Reload button and your computer will recognize the new image.
