Jikoo the Sparrow and Migration
By Golafshan Hassan Zadeh Moghimi
Tehran, Iran

It was a very bright and beautiful autumn morning. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and the trees were red, yellow, orange and pale green. The gangs of birds were noisily flying in the sky. A gentle cool wind was blowing. Near the pond there was a big uproar and a special kind of movement among the birds. They were making lots of noise and moving their wings rapidly. The birds were preparing themselves for a long flight.

Far from the pond, Jikoo, the sparrow was flying lightly and happily in the sky. It was his first autumn so everything was exciting and amazing for him. He wanted to go to the pond to play with Ducky and his other friends. But when he reached the pond he found that Ducky was preparing himself for a long journey. Jikoo became upset because he didn’t know anything about it.

So he asked Ducky “When will you come back?”
“ In the spring I think.”
“ What a long time! Why do you want to go?”
“ Because I have to migrate with Googo the goose, Lilo the crane, Jinjo the swan and the others …”
“ Why?”
“ Because it will be very cold here in winter, so we must travel to warmer places to find food. Don’t you?”
“ No. I stay here.”

Suddenly he became worried and said “I must rush to my nest and tell my parents. They may not know anything about this matter or have forgotten…” So he said good-bye to his friends and flew as fast as he could to his nest. When he reached the nest, he found his parents sitting in their tree.

“ Why are you sitting here? We must hurry. . . The others are going.” he said impatiently.
His parents looked him puzzled and his father asked “What do you mean? What are you talking about?”
And he told his parents the things that he had seen and heard …

When he finished his mother laughed and said “ Oh my sweetie. There’s nothing to worry about. They are going because they must. We have 2 groups of birds: those that migrate because they can not tolerate cold weather and go to warmer places and those that don’t migrate. Migration is a kind of travel for finding warmer places and food.”
His father added “We do not migrate because we are strong enough to tolerate cold weather. We will stay here and wait for them to return in spring. And we will enjoy the cold winter and the white snow…”

Jikoo’s eyes sparkled with pride as he looked at his parents…
