Tabi the Firefly
By Golafshan Hassan Zadeh Moghimi
Tehran, Iran

Once upon a time in a meadow there was a small firefly. Her name was Tabi. Tabi was very special because she was just like a small star, shining brightly at night. She and the other fireflies were like stars falling down from the sky. But Tabi was not happy because she wanted to sleep at night.

Did you know that fireflies eat during the night?

One night as Tabi was sitting on a leaf near a pond, she heaved a sigh and heard someone ask “what’s the matter little firefly?”
She looked around and saw a pond turtle.
Tabi said “I hate the nightime. Everyone is asleep.”
The pond turtle replied “Oh my dear, take a look around. What can you see?”
“Just darkness, silence and loneliness.”
“No, you’re absolutely wrong. Look at the sky and its beautiful moon and stars. You can only see them at night! Look at how you glow in the moon light! The tranquility of night is comforting. And besides, you are not alone!”
“But all the creatures are awake during the day and sleep at night.”
“Not really. . . There are lots of creatures that are awake at night, like bats, owls, moths, frogs … even plants grow at night. Think of how lucky you are. Instead of being upset, go and enjoy your life.”

Tabi smiled and thanked the wise turtle. Suddenly every thing changed for her. She was flying and whirling around. The night was not boring anymore. It was summer, during a blue moon and a warm, gentle breeze was blowing. Everything was alive and fresh in front of her eyes and Tabi could see many creatures and hear lots of new sounds. She was happy to know that life is vibrant at night. She put herself in the hands of the wind and danced beautifully above the meadow like a bright star…

Good night and sweet dreams. . .
