Baby Fruit Purees, Puddings and Mashed Baby Food

Fruit Purees
If you prefer, prepare a fruit puree instead of a fruit juice. Some fruit is better for this. For example, bananas, apples, peaches and pears. Peel the fruit, scrape the surface with a teaspoon and feed it to your baby. You can go scraping at it as your baby eats it to avoid the fruit from getting dark.

Apples are one of the best fruits to prepare baby food with. Most babies are able to tolerate the slight acidity it has. It has a slight laxative effect that can alleviate constipation problems, although sometimes it does cause gas.

Fruit Puddings
Boil a fruit in water that covers it and add in a cinnamon stick. When the fruit is cooked, take the cinnamon out, blend the fruit with the liquid and thicken the pudding with a tablespoons of cornstarch.

Mashed Baby Food
The best mashed foods are those that are homemade. They are quick, cheap and do not have any preservatives. You can also use cereals for babies that are sold in the market and mix them with formula until you get the adequate texture.

To prepare a mashed vegetable meal, place a carrot in a little pot with a peeled yellow potato. Cover them with water and allow it to boil over medium heat until they dissolve. This can then be blended to turn it into a puree and add in a little bit of olive oil. At this stage your baby will need essential fatty acids for forming the membranes of the baby’s cells, nervous system and brain.

You can also prepare purees with yams, potatoes, pumpkin, and rice and artichoke heart.

Remember that at the beginning it is better to combine only two products. As the days go by you will be able to mix other foods together, and every three days you can add in a new type of food. This recommendation applies both for vegetables and fruit.

To know the appropriate consistency for a puree, place the puree in a little plate and flip it completely. If the puree stays stuck to the plate for five seconds, the consistency is very good. Remember that any food that is too water is not very nutritious.
