Common Misconceptions about Breast Milk

Without a doubt, in most cases the lack of interest and small amount of information we get from the doctors and medical assistants is what makes us not be able to feed our babies even though that might be what we most want to do.

This causes a lot of mothers of premature babies that want to breastfeed their babies see their wishes blocked, who then choose to feed their babies special formula by considering that this way their babies will be fed better.

In some case this may be true, but there is a large number of mothers that have not breastfed their babies due to lack of information.

I was personally one of those mothers. I do wish now that I had been more informed and I am sure I would have been able to achieve my dream of breastfeeding my daughter. In that time I simply didn’t know about the benefits it could have had on my daughter. There are mothers that are taking medication for example who don’t try later even after having stopped. Other prejudices that cause some mothers not to breastfeed their babies, even after they have started breastfeeding them are:

  • “My milk is watery”. Yeah, but only the milk that initially comes out at first, the amount of fat goes increasing, and at the end it is five times the amount it was originally.
  • “My baby can’t eat for three hours in a role”. Obviously, no kid can. Only feed the baby when he or she asks for it.
  • “I feed my baby for ten minutes and then she starts to cry. How can she be hungry again?” Breastfeed your baby and if she rejects it, it is obvious the baby is not crying because of hunger.
  • “My baby is not gaining enough weight” The more the baby eats, the more weight he or she will gain.
  • “My baby rejects my breasts” Maybe your baby is more used to bottles and pacifiers. If you avoid giving these to the baby, he will start breastfeeding more.
  • “My nipples hurt” When your nipples hurt a lot or are sensitive it is because you are not placing the baby on your nipples correctly.
