Double, Triple and Quadruple Down Syndrome Test
Another test that can be done with a blood test is for the Down syndrome test, which is the most common of the chromosome abnormalities in babies. This tests is also useful for identifying women that are at risk of having babies with other chromosome abnormalities
The doctor will do the te
st by measuring two, three or four substances in the blood of the mother:
- Alpha-fetoprotein in maternal serum
- HGH
- A form of estrogen
The doctor uses the results of these tests to calculate the risk of Down syndrome. In women that are under thirty-five the test detects the Down syndrome in nearly sixty percent of all the cases it presents itself in. in other words if one hundred women that have fetuses with Down syndrome did the test, the condition would be diagnosed to sixty. By using the quadruple test, the rate of detection goes up seventy-five to eighty percent. If the doctor seeds there is some abnormality, he or she will talk to you about the possibility of getting the amniocentesis test to check the baby’s chromosomes.
