General Anesthesia during Child Labor
When general anesthesia is administered, you become completely unconscious. These days, doctors hardly ever use this technique in deliveries, and rarely in the case of cesareans, because it is associated with a greater risk of complications. Another minus of general anesthesia is that you (the mother) will be completely asleep when your baby is born. However, if during the cesarean there is a coagulation problem that discards the possibility of placing a needle in the spinal marrow, or if the cesarean happens in an emergency situation and there is not time to administer an epidural, you will then need general anesthesia.
Other Alternative Ways of Handling Pain There are many women that used other ways of handling pain during labor that are non-medical. There are some women for example that use hypnosis to induce by suggestion a stage of altered consciousness that allows the body to tolerate pain better. A person that has entered into hypnosis can induce this state, and some people can even be taught how to do autohypnosis.
Remember that if you are considering this option, you will need a lot of previous preparation and training weeks before the delivery in order to truly find relief from pain through hypnosis, and remember also that it does not work for everyone. There is actually only one out of every four individuals that have a high level of suggestion that is required in order to achieve the hypnotic state.
There are also other types of ways of managing the pain of labor that some people use which is acupuncture for example, there are also various types of herbs, massages, reflexology, which is a special type of massage that is done on the feet. There are many different types of websites available that give more information on other types of practices.
