How Many Diapers Does a Baby Use a Day?

This is very variable. There are newborns that urinate four times a day and others ten times or more. Whatever the case, it’s important to control that the baby does not go for more than eight hours without peeing, especially within the first days, if the baby has fever or if it is very hot.

The urine of a baby that has been fed with breast milk is transparent and does not have a smell; if you feed your baby formula, the baby’s pee will be yellowish and will have a stronger odor. Disposable diapers are so absorbent that often times the baby does not realize he or she is wet, in order to verify place a little gauze in the diaper and this will help you to see the color, smell and amount.

Babies that breastfeed go number two more than those fed with formula. Their poo will be more liquid and have more of a clear color (although this can change depending on what the mother eats). Do not get alarmed if in the first weeks the baby’s poo has a greenish color; this is because the bile has not had time to change from green to yellow and because the milk has gone through the digestive tube without disintegrating the ferments. As the digestive system matures, the frequency in which the baby poos will decrease. It can even happen that the baby will not evacuate in three or four days and this is completely normal. Rarely is this an indication of a sickness, but if the fact alarms you, talk about it with your pediatrician. In all cases, the evacuation should never cause pain, crying or bleeding.

Although there is not a specific way to establish a common pattern to how many times a baby has a bowel movement, in general this is the way that it goes:

  • From 1 to 3 months: 5 to 9 diapers a day
  • From 4 to 5 months: 4 to 7 diapers a day
  • From 6 to 12 months: 3 to 6 diapers a day
  • From 12 to 24 months: 2 to 4 diapers a day
