Mother's Diet While Breastfeeding

Mother’s Diet While Breastfeeding

When a woman is breastfeeding, the way her diet should be is something that is very obviously important. The amount of milk a woman produced does not significantly become affected with the diet unless her eating habits are really out of whack. However, if the woman does not get enough calories, it will be difficult for the body to work in order to produce enough milk. There are certain foods also that can have an effect on the baby like cause more gases if you have eaten certain things. So make sure to pay attention to how your baby responds to the different foods you eat and this way you will know which ones to avoid.

Keep in mind that a woman that is breastfeeding should eat around four hundred to five hundred calories more a day than normal. The exact amount varies from woman to woman depending on their weight and how much weight the woman has accumulated during pregnancy. Since breastfeeding does burn some fat, breastfeeding can be useful for getting rid of some of the fat; however you will need to avoid losing weight too quickly because this will affect the amount of milk you produce. You also need to be careful to not gain weight while you are breastfeeding and if this does happen, it means your intake of calories may be too high.

Something that you will also need to be sure to get plenty of is minerals and vitamins, specifically vitamin D, calcium and iron. You can continue taking your prenatal vitamins or another balanced supplement while you are breastfeeding your baby. You should make sure to get an extra amount of calcium, which can be obtained by drinking milk, eating yogurt or other milk products.

Most of the content of breast milk is water. So in order to produce enough, you will need to drink at least seventy-two additional ounces of liquid a day. This means that you should drink around an extra nine glasses of liquid whether it is juice, milk or water. However, make sure to not overdo it either because if you do drink too much liquid it can in fact diminish the amount of milk you produce. A good way to see if you are drinking the correct amount is by the amount of times you urinate. If you notice that your urine has a very intense color, it means you are not drinking enough liquids. If you are constantly going to the bathroom though, it means you are drinking too much liquid.

There are pregnant women that drink coffee and this can sometimes affect how the baby sleeps at night. If you do drink coffee or soft drinks with caffeine, try to reduce the amount you drink until you find a level that the baby is able to tolerate.
