Newborn Size

Newborn Size

Generally newborn babies are born with around 2,700 grams to 3,600 grams and are between forty-six and fifty six centimeters. The exact size depends on the gestational age of the baby, meaning the number of weeks the pregnancy lasted, genetics and other factors such as if the mother had diabetes, if she smoked, how good her diet was during the pregnancy etc.

Most babies are born with heads that are disproportionately bigger in comparison to their bodies. This characteristic is something that happens to all babies. Babies are not able to hold up their heads when they are born and need time to develop muscles so that they are capable of doing so. You will also be able to notice the soft spots in the hind and top part of the baby’s head. These are called fontanels and are the places where the bones of the skull unite. The fontanels allow quick growth of the baby’s brain. The posterior fontanel is located in the back of the baby’s head and generally closes in a few months, but the top fontanel, which is on the top part of the baby’s head, remains open until the baby is ten months to a year old.
