Postpartum Bleeding

Postpartum Bleeding

After the delivery, whether it has been a vaginal delivery or a cesarean, the uterus will start to contract in order to close the blood vessels and therefore stop the bleeding. If the uterus does not close in a normal way, an excessive amount of bleeding can occur. This sort of problem can occur after having given birth to triplets or more babies in the same delivery, or if you have an infection in the uterus, of if placenta tissue stayed inside the uterus after pushing the placenta out. There are however, cases in which excessive bleeding has occurred without an evident or existing cause. When this happens, the doctor or nurse will probably give you a massage that will be destined to helping your uterus contract. If these massages do not help, then you will probably be given some type of medication that will help to promote the contraction.

If you have remains of placenta material in you, it is possible these will need to be removed with a medial instrument. In almost all cases the bleeding stops without any problems. In cases though in which the medication and massages do not help the bleeding to stop, the doctor will talk to you about other forms of treatment.
