Postpartum Sexual Relations

Postpartum Sexual Relations

Most women that have had babies and are still in the postpartum stage don’t think about sex much, if at all. A lot of women have said that they felt their sexual interest diminished considerably during the first weeks and after labor. However, there are times in which the stress and emotional stress of having had a baby just may bring about some thoughts on the subject. There are some cases of women that get back into the mood of having sex right away while in other cases it can last for up to half a year to a year to get sexual interest back.

There are a lot of hormonal changes that occur after the delivery and this can affect the sexual organs. The drastic falling of the levels of estrogen can bring about a loss of lubrication in the vagina and lead to less congestion of the blood vessels, which is the an essential thing when it comes to getting aroused for women and which leads them to having orgasms. Unfortunately due to these reasons, sexual relations can sometimes be painful and unsatisfactory. With time though, the normal hormone levels will come back the same way they were before the pregnancy and the problem tends to go away on its own. In the meanwhile if you and your partner want to have sex, you should consider using a lubricant, which can be very beneficial.

Another thing that often times causes there to be a lack of sexual appetite is the fact that taking care of a baby is so tiring and exhausting. Not only this but your attention will most likely be more focused on the baby rather than on your partner. Since this is such a common thing, it is important to find some time where you and your husband or partner can spend some intimate time completely alone. This does not necessarily mean that you have to have sex but you should definitely take some time to talk together, hold each other and express your feelings to each other.

Doctors will usually tell the mothers to abstain from having sex for four to six weeks after the baby has been born so as to give the vagina and uterus time to heal and to wait until the bleeding stops.
