Pregnancy in Sickness and in Health, Getting an Infection during Pregnancy
Even though pregnancy is something that makes a lot of women feel magical, the truth is that pregnancy can still be difficult for some people to handle. Women are still susceptible to all the diseases and health pro
blems that can affect everybody else. When illnesses occur during pregnancy, they can bring about special consequences.
Getting an Infection during Pregnancy No matter how hard you try, it is impossible to avoid contact with people that carry infections. Keep in mind that most infections do not affect the baby, but they might cause you some discomfort for a little bit.
Kidney and Bladder Infections Bladder infections can present themselves in two ways, as sometimes women have symptoms and sometimes they don’t.
Silent infections are common because they happen to around six percent of pregnant women. The other type which is called cystitis, does bring about certain symptoms which include:
- Persistent need of urinating.
- Pain and burning when urinating.
- Discomfort in the region above the pubis.
- Frequent bowel movements.
The medical term for bladder infection is urinary tract infection. Usually, it is the normal changes of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra during pregnancy that put a woman at higher risk for urinary tract infections than when the woman is not pregnant. All of these structures, are somewhat enlarged and dilated, and they hold more urine than a woman who is not pregnant would. The result is stasis of urine, or urine that might remain sitting for longer periods of time in all of these structures. Keep in mind also, that the urine potentially has a higher amount of glucose or sugar and protein present in the pregnant woman because of the increased amount of filtration that is going on.
