Safe Medication While Breastfeeding

Safe Medication While Breastfeeding

Almost all of the medication a woman takes while breastfeeding pass onto her milk, however generally it is only in small amounts. If you do need to take medication while you are breastfeeding, try to take the minimum dose and only take them after you have finished breastfeeding your baby. This will ensure that your body decomposes almost all of the medication before you have to feed your baby again. However, this does not mean that you should deprive yourself from the medications you need just because you are afraid they are going to pass onto the baby and are afraid they are going to hurt the baby. Just talk to your doctor about it and ask for the ones that will not affect your baby or hinder your breastfeeding.

The following is a list of medications that are safe to take while breastfeeding:

  • Acetaminophen
  • Antacids
  • Most antibiotics
  • Most antidepressants
  • Antihistamines
  • Aspirin
  • Most asthma medications
  • Most hypertension medications
  • Ibuprofen
  • Insulin
  • Most anticonvulsants
  • Most thyroid medications
