Serving Sizes for Children of 4 Months to 2 Years of Age
In the following we will give some orientation about the types of foods and serving sizes that are adequate according to a child’s age, although, as we have previously said, the child’s pediatrician is the person who will decide what the child should eat and at what age he or she should start eating those specific meals.
Babies that are four to six months of age can start to drink fruit juices, soups and soft purees. Do not add salt to these foods and the fruit juices should be watered down.
The indicated foods to prepare soups or puree are: carrots, potatoes, onion and peas. Later on you will be able to add chicken (without the skin) or lean veal. Before blending it, it is convenient to add a teaspoon of olive oil.
When the child is six months old you can add in, beets, marrow, pumpkin, turnip, celery, parsnip to aromatize and 40 grams of skinless chicken or veal along with a teaspoon of olive oil. At this age a baby can also eat fruit purees.
Between the age of eight and nine months you can start feeding a baby eggs, the egg yolk of a hard boiled egg or make an omelet of half an egg. Fresh fish (white meat) can also be fed but you will need to be very careful with the bones. Yogurt can also be introduced as well as semolina, tapioca and noodles. Some pediatricians also suggest feeding a child blue fish such as sardines, salmon, swordfish or tuna.
