Edema or Swelling in Pregnancy Much before the baby is big enough to cause your abdomen to stretch, you will probably feel your pants are tighter and your abdomen will look like it is swollen. This happens immediately after conception. The progesterone, one of the two key hormones in pregnancy, makes you retain liquid. It also makes intestinal movement happen at a slower rate, which also contributes to the size of the abdomen. Estrogen, which is the other crucial hormone in pregnancy, makes the uterus expand, which also makes the abdomen feel bigger. In many cases this effect is more pronounced in third or forth pregnancies than in the first or second because the pregnancy of the first already made these abdominal muscles expand.
