The Light, Sounds and Silence for Your Baby

The Light, Sounds and Silence for Your Baby

In general, it is good for the baby to sleep in the dark at night and with a little bit of sunlight during the day, so that little by little the baby learns how to establish sleeping schedules. However, at home during the child’s adaptation process, it might be difficult for your baby to sleep if there isn’t any light. Remember that when she was born she was surrounded by lights and all different types of sounds so don’t try to change these habits so abruptly. In the baby’s room, or in your room (if the baby sleeps with you), you can place a lamp with soft lighting that you can leave on during the night and try turning it off when the baby is already asleep. The only risk is that if the baby wakes up she might start crying when she opens her eyes to complete darkness. Sometimes it will surprise you to find that when the baby sleeps with you she will not need the light, but this is because she will feel safe next to your side.

Some premature babies on the other hand, do not need light but some type of noise, since if they wake up and perceive total silence they will start crying easily. In these cases it is convenient to leave the radio on with soft music playing. This is something that a lot of mothers find out about a little too late, after they have spend several nights in a role walking their restless baby.

There are mothers that have said that their babies slept well with the sound of the vacuum cleaner for example, and one mother decided to record this sound and use it as back ground sound when it was difficult for her baby to sleep at night. This logically, has an obvious explanation, which is that sometimes, babies that hear continual and repeated noise, if these are soft, will relax and sleep better.
