The Second Step to Reading; Sets of Words & Sentences
When the child has already acquired a basic reading vocabulary of loose words, he is ready to start putting these words together in order to form pairs or combinations of two words, and grammatical sentences or combinations of more than two words. This is an important intermediate step between loose words and full sentences. The sets of words and the grammatical phrases can be used as a bridge between the elements of basic reading construction and the following organizational unit which is the phrase. Obviously the following important objective is the capacity
of reading a complete group of words that are related amongst each other, which is better known as a phrase. But this intermediate step of the set of words and brief sentences will help the child to get to that next level with easy steps. Now the mother will need to go over the vocabulary of her child and determine what sets of words she can form using the words that she has already taught the child. It will not be long before she discovers that she needs some modifying words in order to vary the diet of words of her child so as to form short grammatical sets and sentences that make sense. |
